Policy Adviser

Are you searching for exposure and experience on a variety of tax issues relating to the insurance industry?
As a Policy Adviser in our Taxation team, you will help develop policy for insurance companies with a particular focus on direct tax and financial services products. You will also provide support on tax issues affecting general developments in policy on insurance issues, such as: financial regulation; solvency; and product regulation. In this role, you will work on a variety of diverse issues facing the insurance industry whilst working collaboratively with colleagues at all levels to maintain an effective and influential profile for the ABI.
This is a part time role (4 days per week) and will be based at our offices in the City of London.

  • Be the voice of the UK insurance industry, leading debate and speaking up for insurers.
  • Represent the UK insurance industry to government, regulators and policy makers in the UK, EU and internationally, driving effective public policy and regulation.
  • Advocate high standards of customer service within the industry and provide useful information to the public about insurance.
  • Promote the benefits of insurance to the government, regulators, policy makers and the public.
Key tasks and responsibilities:
  • Review policy on maintenance and operation of the UK regime, though consultation with members, and influence decision making by representing the industry’s views in writing or in discussion with UK Government, the OECD, European bodies and other key stakeholders.
  • Manage one or more of the ABI Working Groups; assisting on policy development on wider tax issues dealt with by the team, such as savings incentives, policyholder tax, international tax, indirect tax issues and Automatic Exchange of Information initiatives, where appropriate.
  • Lead on engagement with members to raise their understanding of tax issues affecting their policy areas and encourage the need to consider tax impacts early in the debate.
  • Monitoring developments and change in general and life insurance markets with particular regard being given to business and regulatory factors driving those markets.
  • About you:
    To be considered for this opportunity, you will have an understanding of the UK Tax System and UK Tax Policy, with a broad understanding or keen interest in obtaining experience and knowledge on a range of non-tax issues such as financial and product regulation and wider developments in the financial markets. You will have excellent analytical and communication skills with a premium placed on a friendly personality.
